What to Do After A Newly Replaced Windshield?
Posted in Windshield Replacement, on August 04, 2020 By Admin
Your car’s windshield is one of its most important safety features of your car, and taking care of it correctly will help you avoid any damage and ensure you don’t need to replace your windshield. However, if you have already received an auto glass replacement, there are a few steps you can follow to ensure your investment stays in good shape.
What To Do With a New Windshield
Your first actions following windshield replacement will help you keep it in good shape for years to come. At General Auto Glass, we suggest the following five tips for keeping your new windshield healthy.
1. Don’t drive home right away
New windshields are glued into place using a special adhesive that forms a waterproof seal around the glass. Like many adhesives, it needs undisturbed time to dry and set, so we recommend giving your newly replaced windshield at least an hour before heading home.
2. Clean and Dry
Once you’re home, park your car in the garage or in a covered area, this is because you want to avoid having anything drip, fall, bump, or scrape up against the new seal - damage at this stage could cause the seal to fail or the glue to malfunction. Keep the interior and exterior of your car clear of any clutter that might disturb the newly sealed glass.
3. Don’t Cover It
If you can’t park indoors, covering your new windshield to protect it might seem like a good idea - but we don’t recommend it! Moisture and heat can build up under the cover and a lack of fresh air will disturb the adhesive. If you can’t park indoors, watch the weather and schedule your appointment for a sunny day.
4. Avoid The Car Wash
After your new windshield is in place, you want to avoid automatic car washes or power washers for a few days to ensure that your adhesive isn’t shifted or damaged before it’s fully cured. However, an old-fashioned hand wash is okay!
5. Leave The Tape On
Specialty retention tape is often used to hold auto glass replacement in place. This tape helps keep weather and objects away from your moldings and protect it during the drying process. It may not look great, but leaving it on for 2-3 days after your replacement windshield installation will help protect it.
