Newly Replaced Windshield Maintenance Tips

Most of us don’t pay much attention to our vehicle windshield – that is, until there’s a chip or crack that might obscure our driving view. Chips, cracks, and scratches should be repaired ASAP, mainly because auto glass repair will avert the need for complete auto glass replacement.
With auto glass repair, it’s not uncommon for drivers to delay the work or forget about it entirely. At some point, the postponement may require complete auto glass replacement, at which time some maintenance tips are recommended. The new windshield is worth the maintenance.
Don’t drive the vehicle right after installation
Windshield replacement requires the use of a special adhesive that takes some time to cure. The curing time depends on several factors, including humidity and temperature. As it is, the curing process could take 24 hours. In other words, it’s better not the drive le right after installation.
It’s best to leave the protective adhesive tape
Some repair shops affix protective adhesive tape on a new windshield during the install process. While it might be tempting to remove the tape right away, it’s best to leave it for at least 24 hours. This ensures that dirt and debris don’t stick to the adhesive and compromise the installation.
Stay away from car washes for the near term
Because car washes use high-pressure water jets, it’s better to stay away right after you’ve had a windshield replaced. You certainly don’t want to risk the integrity of the windshield sealant or adhesive. In fact, some detergents might also affect the “silicone-based” sealants and adhesives.
Take extra care driving after the installation
Right after auto glass replacement, it’s important to take extra care while driving. Undue vibrating on rough terrain is discouraged. Slamming car doors is also discouraged. Finally, it’s a good idea to keep one window slightly open in order to allow air pressure to escape when closing a door.
A good idea to leave one of the windows open
In regions where summer temperatures can get extremely hot, air pressure inside the vehicle can build up. When parking a vehicle for long periods, it’s a good idea to leave one of the windows open to release the excessive heat and air pressure. This is especially true right after installation.
How to notice a poorly installed windshield
Even with the proper precautions, it’s possible that your windshield was in some way installed incorrectly. You may see gaps between the windshield and frame. You may hear a whooshing sound while driving. Or you may notice unusual rattling. All of these will require some attention.
